FAQ’s

What is Camp Travel?

Camp Travel is an alternative style holiday experience focused on giving back to the local community in the form of teaching in the local schools or through the construction project. It combines the experience of local rural Thailand with highlights of the country and the chance to explore hidden gems along the way.

Do I need to have teaching experience to take part in Camp Travel?

No, you do need previous experience teaching or working with children, a positive attitude and a willingness to get stuck in is all you need! We have designed a complete itinerary for the school which is progressive and educational for the children and easy for non-teachers to pick up and deliver in the classroom.

How should I prepare for the teaching experience?

Before your start date, you will be sent through the list of topics you will be teaching in the classroom, we will ask you to have a think about potential games, songs and exercises to support the lesson plan for that day. If you are feeling creative you could produce visual aids or flashcards to support learning. In addition, you will also be given access to the 30-hour online Young Learners course to help you prepare.

How is the teaching structured?

Ahead of the teaching, we will finalise the teaching plans, usually, we will have 2-4 teachers in a classroom with one person leading the session and everyone help to support the class and give individual attention to the pupils, we also break the classroom up and work in smaller groups. You will also have a Thai staff member in the classroom to help translate if you need assistance.

What safeguarding procedures are in place to ensure the safety of the children?

All participants on the Camp Travel program will have an enhanced background check before departure. All classroom will have a Thai staff teacher present and at no point will any participants be left alone with the children, the school also enforces very strict safeguarding policies.

Do I have to have experience to get involved in the construction project?

You do not need to have prior experience, as long as you are willing to get stuck in and get your hands dirty, you can turn your hand to making bricks, painting or even have a go at rendering. People that are a bit more handy are more than welcome to get involved with more complex projects, we have local English speaking builders on site that will guide you.

What type of people go on Camp Travel?

Camp Travel attracts a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds, people who have missed out on travelling when they were younger and want the chance to experience their 'Gap Year'.

Retired, ex or current teachers who want to experience education in a different cultural or want to further develop their skills.

But most of all people with a sense of adventure that genuinely wants to give back, make a positive difference in the world and leave a legacy.

Can I travel alone, with a friend, son/daughter, partner etc?

Yes, we can cater to solo travellers, couples and groups, we have double, triple and twin share accommodation.

How much spending money should I bring?

This will depend on your personal spending habits, you will need to budget for meals not included in the itinerary, you can eat for as little as £2 per meal in Thailand but if you want to eat at the local restaurants expect to pay £5-£10 per meal, if you are eating at more western restaurants especially in Hua Hin budget around £20 per person.

What should I pack for Camp Travel?

A full packing list will be sent to you before departure, but we would recommend plenty of lightweight clothing that can be easily washed. Ladies will need to keep shoulders and legs covered when visiting the local temples, Camp Travel will provide polo shirts to wear whilst teaching in the school and you will need lightweight trousers or long skirts.

Will I have access to WiFi?

Yes, you will. There’s WIFI available at almost all bars, accommodations and restaurants. However, please be aware that you are in south-east Asia and sometimes the WIFI may be slow! If you want consistently reliable WIFI, we recommend bringing an unlocked smartphone and purchasing a local sim card. Data packages can be purchased reasonably cheap.
